TC: Drug Bust Drags DC Sports into Headlines

Steroids and sports has been one of THE topics in the news in recent years. Just a few weeks ago it was Manny and today, its our home town teams in the Nationals and Capitals. In Manny's case we all knew it was true because there was a positive drug test. This story, so far, is completely hearsay. Because let's be honest, if you were to get arrested would you immediately begin running your mouth? So that raises the real question. Do you believe this guy? And further more, what is going to happen if he starts throwing names out there?

What we do know it that the guy had a shit ton of steroids at his house. $200,000 dollars worth to be exact. Which is great for anyone who wants to get themselves in trouble with the law. Because now, Richard Thomas and his wife are staring at 10 counts of possession of anabolic steroids with intention to sell and deliver; one count of possession of a firearm in commission of a felony; 10 counts importation of anabolic steroids into state of Florida; one count of maintaining a residence for selling drugs.

Maybe this brings to the forefront of why this man would throw out the teams he allegedly dealt steroids to and the possibility that he will throw out big time names. It is like when someone is drowning, they start grabbing for anything that can get them above water. Unfortunately in Dick's case, nothing he grabs at is going to help him get though this one, it is only going to make it worse for those people he tries to involve. All we can do now is hope this is some serious bullshit. But from this quote maybe it's not.

The sheriff said when Thomas was asked whether he had sold steroids to professional athletes, he replied, " "You name the sport, and I've sold steroids to athletes who play it."

Tell Me Something Wednesday: Rock the Red

Minutes before going to the Caps game yesterday, I was sitting in Donald Brashear's downtown apartment talking about how crazy this season has been and what has got the team to this point. Though he wasn't going to suit up, Brash seemed just as nervous/anxious/excited as anyone I've ever seen. Just before we headed outside Brash said, "Wait til tonight, it's gonna be crazy." Then we were off.

As we walked down H Street, chills ran down my spine. The only thing I can compare the atmosphere to was that of a Nebraska football game. It was a sea of red running through the streets. The pep band, C-A-P-S CAPS CAPS CAPS chants, dudes on stilts, and best of all, showing love to #87 who, as we all know, was suspended for the game.

After parting ways with the Enforcer, Kirsten and I met up with Mr. Devine and his family and friends. Their group was filled with some familiar faces, yet plenty of new ones which seems to be the case for us every game. One of those familiar faces however, was Jason Campbell.  The QB was just as excited as anyone to be there, including the group of folks in the red rain ponchos behind the Rangers bench.


As far as the game goes, all I have to say is I am gay for Varly. The guy is ridiculous. He owned the first 40 minutes of the game giving the team the chance to finally come to life in the 3rd. And did they ever when this happened



At that point everyone including the team loses their mind. I mean LOSES it. From the high-fiving, to the feet stomping, to the screams it certainly made for a magical moment. From then on it was all about hanging on to the lead. As time ticked down the Red Sea rumbled. CAPS WIN GAME SEVEN.

TC: Caps/Panthers

Last nights Cap's loss to the Panthers wasn't pretty. Its tough when the best thing to cheer for is in opening and closing seconds of the game.

“There are no excuses for what we did today,” said veteran Caps forward Matt Bradley. “Every guy was not prepared and we didn’t play a tight game at all. It’s disappointing when you have such a good game against Boston yesterday and come back with an effort like this. So we’re all individually going to have to look at ourselves and how we prepared and why we weren’t ready for the game.”

Not only that, the Panthers seemed to surround the Caps goal the entire first period. Fans even booed goalie Jose Theodore during the Panthers penalty shot. Though he made a great stop, the team went into the 2nd period down 4-1 and Theodore was replaced by Neuvirth.

The rest of the game was pretty much filled with Panthers power plays and disappointed Caps fans. A woman sitting behind me wasn't frustrated at the play, rather she was mad at the fans around her for the choice words they had for the referees. She did however, seem to cheer up every time the Caps were penalized because it gave her daughter a chance to see the guys up close. You can hear her cheer at the :13 second mark in this video.



Besides the tough loss there are a couple cool things going on in the next couple weeks if you are a Caps fan. Friday night Elliot from DC 101 will be hosting a celebrity bar tending event with Mike Green at The Front Page in Arlington. This should be a pretty cool event with a portion of all sales going to the So Kids Can program. Also, next Friday Green will be signing autographs at PSGameGear in the Dulles mall. TC: Sidney Crosby wa wa wa wa

Sidney Crosby is good at talking shit, Alex Ovechkin is good at hockey. I didn't realize this until yesterday when I thought that I was going to see two of the greats in the NHL. I saw one who is great and he was wearing a red jersey. The other one, I saw him cry like a 7 year old who got beat up by the school yard bully. Maybe he's mad that Ovechkin has 20 more goals than him. Or maybe because his team won't make the post season. Either way, Sidney wasn't holding in his frustration...



After the game, #87 decided to complain some more stating that he didn't like Ovechkin's post goal celebrations. As for Ovechkin, "He talks too much."

Also, an attempt to share some insight to the UWC even on Saturday night. I know plenty of people thought that Ovi was a little too standoffish to the fans at the event but that isn't entirely true. I watched the guy smile for 100 plus pictures and sign just as many autographs. What's wrong with having a good time with some buddies, trying to focus on the game, and not be overly excited to gladhand the 6,000 in attendance?

TC: Goin' Green

The Washington Capitals are pretty good. They currently sit at number 2 in the Eastern Conference with 34 wins. Why are they so good? Well there are plenty of reasons but one of those reasons is Mike Green. He has scored 19 goals in 41 games, that tops his previous best of 18 goals which last year he managed in double the games. He is also one game shy of matching the NHL record for most consecutive games with a goal by a defenseman. So ya, he's playing some pretty damn good hockey right now.

All of that is cool in the big scheme of things, but he also scored an empty netter on Saturday night from nearly a mile a way. It was the first shorthanded goal of his NHL career and it happened five feet from where I sat. I was once told that a picture says a thousand words, video tells the rest. So when I saw my picture in Sunday's post and again on the Sports Bog I thought, "Why am I not celebrating!" So I went to the video.




You see, the photo captured a single split second in time that can be looked at an analyzed forever. In reality, that instant was over in 3 seconds and I looked away for one instant and missed the party. So good thing my camera was rolling...


To top the evening off, besides watching some great hockey, I finally accomplished my goal. Leaving the arena with a hockey stick. I have been trying to steal one of Ovechkin's but why steal one when the game's all star lets you have it? So thanks Mike Green, for giving me one of the greatest gifts I have ever been given. Also thanks to Eric Shuster for making it happen.

TC: Washington Post's Coverage of the Caps

It has been well documented that the Cooley's love the Caps and as of late that's all we have to do. Since Chris is in Hawaii and my wife was working I had to go solo to the game on Saturday and I got to witness one of the greatest things ever. At the end of the third period the Caps had a 4-2 lead and also had two players in penalty. But do they give up a score? Hell no! They stuff last year's Stanley Cup champs and end up winning a huge home game in front of a sold out crowd. Amazing. 

Shortly after the game I snuck (literally) into the locker room to make a second unsuccessful attempt to steal Ovechkin's stick. While there I ran into Mike Wise from the Washington post and apparently there is a rumor going around that the Post "gives the Caps too much coverage." With no preface to the question, Wise asked me if I thought that was true. He did the same with others at the game on Saturday and got a similar response. 



After giving some thought and research to the question, I have a new answer. HELL NO the Post doesn't give the Washington Capitals too much coverage. The only media outlet that does give ample coverage is Comcast. And that is only because they air the games. With that said, I am proud to have been on the Caps bandwagon since the start of the season. I will continue to ride it all the way to the Stanley Cup finals. I hope to see you on board.

Anytime you can pull off the fishing hat and shades on the ice and score a goal with the opposite hand you are a bad ass in my book. Ovechkin for MVP 2009.



Also, I can't wait to ask him about the dancing girls on the jumbotron. I have been caught doing some good things on there but never checking out the fans.

Smile/Kiss Cam

If this is worthy of making it on Steinberg's blog, we think it is worthy for our blog. Hopefully by know you have read about our latest hockey adventure. You know, the one where we almost stole Ovechkin's stick, left a luxury automobile running idle for 7 hours at the metro station, and made it on the jumbo tron...twice. Well Dan actually managed to get this footage and we are happy to share it.

Hockey

Thanks to Comcast, Eric Shuster, and all the hockey players that stopped by and said hello for a minute after the game. Before we left Leesburg last night to head to the Verizon Center there was an inconclusive moment deciding whether or not the game was worth the travel. Here is my top ten why it was worth it.

1. Our seats were on the glass. It's bad ass to sit on the front row for a hockey game. I'm definitely going back.

2. Making out with Christy on the scoreboard kiss cam. I also made the Delta Dental smile cam. I am all about the jumbo tron at DC sporting events.

3. Double metro trips into the city full of pleasure. -Arriving at the first train we boarded as the doors closed; Tanner didn't make it. I watched my friend Preston do pull ups on the hand rail on the way home. - We had a leather jacket wearing stalker following us and had to go covert to get him off our trail.

4. Even more car craziness. When we got back to the Vienna stop and walked to the parking lot I found that somehow I had left the Mercedes running for the entire time. 5pm to 2am. Needless to say the gas was pretty low. How no one stole the car I'm not sure, but I do know that special push button start is killing me.

5. Meeting Kozlov after the game. I took cell phone pictures and sent them to my friend Kozlowski "Koz" immediately.
6. Trying to break into the locker room to steal Ovechkin's stick. We didn't get it.
7. Some crazy girl in the bar grabs my hand and says "I just want to tell you.... Your my second favorite tight end...behind Witten." Then she throws in a "Oh, bitch ass!" It ended there for me as I proceeded to act like a nine year old and quickly explain she was the ugliest girl in the bar. She was. No really, she was. And I felt better afterward.

8. Everyone in the city loves to yell "Coooooley! Like were in the stadium. I guess kind of fitting in the hockey game, but kind of weird on the street. It just doesn't happen that often in Ashburn, so it just surprised me to hear it everywhere we went. It is pretty damn cool though!

9. Talking shit to the other teams players. I love being a fan. There is just something great about screaming at the opposing team. At least telling a guy he is a bitch and your gonna beat his ass after the game. The weird thing was actually seeing them in the tunnel after the game. No way they remembered, but then, I might have.
10. Getting out of bed at 11:15 this morning. It was a long night, but I haven't been in bed till 11 in a long time. It felt so good.

TC: New Hockey Fans

A few weeks ago before the Redskins game I met Nicklas Backstrom, Alex Ovechkin, and Mike Green down on the field. I will not lie and say I am a huge hockey fan cause I'm not. I have never been to or even watched a game. So for me, meeting these three was like meeting some regular guys excited for a football game. But after attending the Caps game last night, regular would be the understatement of a lifetime. I am not kidding when I tell you that what these guys do on the ice is nothing short of amazing. I mean I can remember when I was in middle school playing field hockey. It was hard for me to score a goal then...on an inexperienced 13 year old goalie. And last night, the Caps scored three goals. The most exciting came with 5 seconds left. It was an open netter that traveled the entire length of the ice.

Now the goals were great and all but the best thing about the whole night didn't happen to be the scoring nor was it a fight (there were close calls but no real ones). It was however, the blocked penalty shot in the third period that would have tied the game with about ten minutes left. Backup goalie Brent Johnson bitch slapped the puck away from Rangers captain Chris Drury before he could even think about taking the shot. It was amazing.

“I just came out and challenged him as much as I could,” Johnson said. “He was close enough that when he tried to go to the backhand, I was able to get my stick on it.”

So with that said, the Capitals officially have two new fans. And if you're not a fan I challenge you to get out to a game...you'll be hooked. It is unreal! So thanks to Comcast Sportsnet for getting us out. We loved it.
